HANDPAN SPACEDRUM®: INTRODUCTION
The Spacedrum® belongs to the Trinidad steeldrum and Hang family (the Hang is made in Switzerland by Panart® and has been distributed by Djoliba during 5 years).
It’s a french designed melodic metal percussion.
Philippe Maignaut & Djoliba are designers with trademark and patent filed.
In october 2011 they have created together a company called Metal Sounds dedicated to the making of metal melodic percussions.
The Spacedrum® is made for all the percussionists, beginners or experienced, and other musicians looking for new sounds, new types of game or just musical discovery!
It is played with hands or with sticks specifically designed for this instrument.
Its dimensions and its ergonomic shape allows to take it everywhere with you, to put it on your own thighs or improvised support, to play outdoor, live or studio.
Since September 2012 with the new generation of Spacedrum, the range is available in 3 versions:
Nota: the number of notes may vary for custom models.
Thanks to these three sizes the Spacedrum is available in pentatonic, diatonic and even chromatic ranges. It is also the first instrument of its kind to propose a complete chromatic scale (13 notes) which permit to play all styles of music in any key.
It is also possible to “create” your own Spacedrum!
By selecting the “ Customized Spacedrum “ offer you can set yourself an original range and choose one of the three sizes we propose (ø 19”, ø 21″ or ø 24″).
To practice your instrument, amplifier, or simply protect we offer a range of accessories dedicated to the Spacedrum: sticks, covers, flight cases… These accessories have been designed to bring you the best comfort and to explore all the Spacedrum possibilities.
Note: a rubber profile is around the instrument, over its entire circumference. This profile is removable and serves as a damper. The Spacedrum can be used with or without this accessory according to the type of sound you want to get (muted or bright).
In front of the increasing interest of musicians for this new family of instruments we want to offer a real quality service, responsiveness and advice. To determine which model suits you the best please contact us and trust our experience. Your Spacedrum can be quickly delivered and a repairing/re-tuning service is available for any owner of such instrument (Spacedrum, Hang, Caisa, Halo… All trade marks).
Enjoy your Spacedrum…
The manufacturing process of Spacedrum is the result of several years of study and research.
This is an exciting and complex percussion to manufacture.
Our initial purpose, the convergence of the 5 parameters below, is now acquired:
- Sound Quality
- Ergonomics game
- New Formats
- Best Quality/price ratio
AN UNIQUE KNOW-HOW IN FRANCE
For nearly 20 years Phillipe Maignaut manufactures, provides and tunes steel drums (pan drums) in the South of France.
Several years of research in mechanical production of steel drums, and experience by making traditional “pans”, have been used to bild the Spacedrum project.
Using specific tools, we offer a full range of Spacedrum designed and assembled with great care from selected steel sheets, using some mechanical process.
The tuning, it is an art. This know-how acquired along the years is a guarantee of quality that we can now produce reliable and sound instruments.
MANUFACTURING AND TUNING PROCESS
Once our plates of steel are selected, we reproduce the manual stretching funds (stretching by hydroforming) in perfect proportions and surface conditions. After having trained and urged the sound-hole we are proceding to a thermic treatment. Further work is done by pneumatic and manual hammering (dome-forming and notes, press …) before the first tuning starts. The dome undergoes another thermic and anti-corrosion treatment and is tuned again.
Finally, the two elements (dome and bottom) are assembled by welding. When these steps are completed, surface treatment (patina) and finishing come to punctuate a final tuning phase that validates the end of the process.
The Spacedrum is then packed in custom manufactured box to be shipped without risk of being damaged.
Since September 2012, with a new alloy steel, Spacedrum EVOLUTION has better sound characteristics, and permanently removes any corrosion problems.
To ensure the Spacedrum production in France is to ensure the quality control and the monitoring. The full manufacturing process is easily controllable, from the purchase of raw materials to the finished instrument.
Each Spacedrum is unique, fully manually granted, so this home-made work permits us to answer to special queries.
Our workshop in France also guarantees our customers efficient and fast service, with adapted tools to repair and/or re-grant any instrument.
Re-granting a Spacedrum costs between 70€ and 200€ maximum. We will do a specific study and an preliminary estimate for each case, we start the work after your validation.
